Scott Ross Straight Talk

Poverty & the Underworld

Many people have abandoned inner cities and neighborhoods fleeing to the suburbs for security and stability. Yet, there are those who have been willing to stay, or like others who have been willing to move into these concrete jungles of despair. In so doing, they are salt, light, and hope, establishing their own homes as places of refuge and hospitality. Hospitality is to open oneself to others, creating a non-threatening environment in where people are called to change, but at the same time accepted as they are.

Ladies and Gentlemen, this is not just the responsibility of others, it is our responsibility and most particularly it is the specific calling and mandate of those who call themselves "Christian." From the beginning of his life where there was "no room at the inn" it was Christ himself who had no property, no place to lay his head, who was a wanderer who in his homelessness identified himself with the poor, the oppressed, the downcast, the sick, and the disenfranchised of society. He in turn says to us: " I was hungry and you fed me, thirsty and you gave me drink; I was a stranger and you received me in your homes, naked and you clothed me; I was sick and you took care of me, in prison and you visited me. As you do it to the least of these (or refuse to do it) you do it to me." We need compassionate people who want to get involved. Individually, as groups and churches. If you don't know what to do or how to do it, write us for information. We have people who will show you how. This will mean sacrifice, but it is our job to champion the oppressed, give the orphan his rights and plead the widow’s cause. DO YOU HEAR THE KNOCK ON YOUR DOOR?

God bless,
Scott Ross
