Concern for kids

This Week's Kids in Crisis

"Where there is no vision the people perish; but he who keeps the law of God – blessed is he." This statement is usually used to encourage people to plan, to set goals, to make contact with God as to the details of their future, and then to firm the commitment by keeping God’s laws.

I want to direct this statement to the role of a parent in a child’s life. Your child needs to know they have a purpose in life, a value and worth beyond just that God loves them. Your child should hear from your mouth that they have both current value and a purpose in the future.

If you regularly put a child down, and effectively convince them that they are worthless and bad, they will have no vision for their future. If you praise them, even for small things, and encourage their talents and skills to the best of your ability they will believe they can take on the future.

Every parent goes through times when you really believe the child is hopeless, when their misbehavior ruins any hopes you have for them. Let those moments pass without placing a lifelong curse on your child. They do have value, and God really does love them. Hold your tongue, and hold your child.

God bless you,

Diane Morstad
